Stain for White Oak Floors - what is it made of?

A flooring company is staining and polyurethaning my floors. The worker/owner told me he mixes the stain to my liking. Today, when I had to choose the color, he said, "It is very simple to make it what you want. It is just a mixture of polyurethane and paint." Is that mixture appropriate to use as a stain? The company has been in business for a long time and was highly recommended. Thank you!

It very well could be Artist oil paint mixed with oil based poly, or acrylic art paint with water based poly. it's not uncommon in wood finishing to tint all kinds of top coats, lacquer gets a dye or a product called trans-tint that is dilutable in lac. thinner and alcohol for work with shellac. If what he does works, I'd not question it too severely. Now obviously oil and water mix would be an issue so ya can't just add latex paint to oil based poly. I'm guessing this is a "pickled" oak finish that he is creating? There are many ways to achieve that , I would warn that the oil poly will have more amber color and can look kinda yellow-ish compared to a water clear , water based poly.

Spheramid Enterprises is correct. I've done it many times. It's actually a fun process especially when you're the one that gets to choose the color!
