We just installed a completely new kitchen. I didn't want a full (counter to cabinet bottom) backsplash. I used 1-tile (6x6) high and a chair rail ridge on top. I have a backsplash that does not clash with my countertop, cabinets or paint.

I am partial to subway tile - I like the clean lines and it's a classic look that doesn't go out of style. Find a color in your countertops & cabinets that will coordinate and go from there. You can always buy a few sample pieces at Home Depot or Lowe's and see if you like the color combination. If you need to go to a tile store for a better selection, they'll also let you try out samples to take home.

Classic subway tile...high gloss white is very popular now. There is now a beveled subway tile that adds awesome character and you still get the same classic look. I would do the beveled...it is beautiful and very inexpensive but looks high end. Google it...you'll see what I mean!!

We did beadboard when we remodeled our kitchen and love it. It's easy to put up and if you change your mind and want to put up tile, easy to take down.
