How can I repaint my cabinets?

When I purchased my home I was in a hurry and painted the cabinets without properly prepping. 3 years later and they look awful. Any suggestions on what I can do to refinish them without actually taking the cabinets down?

A photo would help on their condition. If the paint is peeling you can strip them with Citristrip. Its a gel paint remover perfect for vertical surfaces. Remove doors and hardware. If the paint just looks bad, you can sand to smooth out the old paint. Prime with KILZ, BIN, or Zinsser primer. Then paint. Seal with at least three coats of water based polyurethane. Use a foam roller and foam brush for a smooth finish.

You will have to remove the doors and hardware. There is no easy way to re-paint them without stripping the existing finish.Eventually the paint will peel off.Follow Williams advice for the painting and sealing.

Hi Kathy! I'm afraid I agree with William and Janet. By not taking the time to prep first, you compounded the work now, but you can do it! When I did some of mine a while back, after I stripped them most of them were not very smooth and I ended up having to sand every bit of them so the paint would look the best. (They were oak but I'm not sure what kind of finish was on them, or what the prior homeowner put on them-it seemed plastic like or waxy.) At the time I didn't have a small electric hand sander, like a Mouse, but I would recommend having one in case you need it! Wishing you the best

Thank you. Yes the paint is peeling, mostly on the doors and drawers but also on the framework. I'll give your suggestions a try. Thank you again.

I think chalk paint is the thing to do after u prep it . I used that on a cupboard after a hurry up job .
