Need to redo a dresser - any suggestions?

I want to change this dresser and make it less masculine. Definitely not black. It has a top that looks like a leather texture (don't know that I like it). The pulls are 2" on center and I found that is not a very common size, so I probably will keep them. I am someone that is not a fan of the distressed look.

If you are going to repaint it, you can fill in the draw pull holes and re-drill them where you want them. As for the leather top, leave it black, paint the dresser cream and accent with black...stencil some flowers across one side up toward the top...maybe with an Effiele Tower on it too! Then pick a knob that matches your design.

Thank you Jeanette, I like the idea of black accents to match top color. I am not very good with stencils, so would probably have to use the stick on stencils I have heard about.

@Jcw You can also use patterned wallpaper and cut out the design. If you're a lover of roses, look for a rose pattern and cut them out. Or wallpaper the center of the doors with something you like. Wallpaper, fabric, etc. The possibilities are endless. There are also pressed wood designs in many sizes at places like Home Depot for wood workers. There are scrolls and swirls and leaves. They glue on. And depending on how handy you are, there's a ton of fancy trim you might be able to utilize. Fill in the holes, paint it, put on fancy glass drawer pulls and you've already made it feminine.

If you don't want it masculine, paint it pink or what other colors would look good in the room you will put it in. A pretty cream color is always nice. And you can change the pulls, but I can't see them that well in the photo's, so I can't say on that. You can always paint them too, just coat them with water based poly after to keep the color clean longer.

i always say the same thing when asked this question.... just have fun with it... with all the new crazy tape shapes you can chevron stripe or do a multitude of things...decide where it is going to be placed and paint a color that goes.. i got bold and painted my dresser blue with white drawers and i love it xx

Obviously I am here to talk about hardware...haha. But I would really suggest using some wood filler to fill in the 2" center holes and choose yourself some new hardware. If you want it to be less masculine, the hardware might be the most important part after the paint job. It is sooo easy to fill in those old holes. Might cost you a couple bucks and a few minutes, but then you can choose whatever hardware you want.

@D Lawless Hardware You are right, not only the color but the hardware and straight grooves in the design make this piece masculine to me.

Glass pulls would girlie it up nicely even if you did nothing else.

You could also fill in the grooves with either wood putty or bondo (follow directions on can) and sand for a smooth look. If you do this, be sure to prime before painting.

chalk paint or milk paint are awesome to work with. You can stay very neutral or go with a great color! No mistakes..if you hate how it's turning out. Just paint it another color. Good luck..I bet it'll be beautiful. Mimi

I like all of these ideas. My daughter sanded down an old dresser. Painted top black and rest an off white. She made it into a cabinet to hold her DVD player and cable boxes by removing the top drawers and adding shelves inside. So you could leave the leather top and rethink your need for storage in some way.

@Marge This is an excellent candidate for a redo that involved removing the drawers. I might keep the bottom two, but I'd use the rest of the drawers for something else and turn this into a bar or buffet with shelves.

jcw - The leather look area is perfect for creating a marbleized look as if it were inlaid in the dresser. I would use an electric sander to make that area smoother. Use a primer for the entire dresser and pick up a marbelizing kit from a craft store such as Michaels. Just marbelize the leather look area in a light beige multicolor. It is an easy to do process that does not require any artistic ability. Coat it then with a couple of coats of poly. Paint the rest of the dresser in a light color of your choosing after filling the holes left by the pulls and redrill them as necessary to accomodate more feminine pulls. I am attaching a before and after combo image of a table that I refinished with a granite look painted finish.

I'm thinking it would be great in a red. ASCP has a red that I like, it's Emperor's Silk. You can also find a great red spray paint and then wax it good. I would also fill in the holes for new hardware. It almost has an Asian flair, so red would work great. You could also do an accent color in the depressed lines and match it to new hardware.

Hi jcw. Are you repurposing or using it as a dresser? Do you want to keep it as is but change the color or keep it as a dresser with a shelf at the top or the bottom? The possibilities for this great piece is endless. Let us know. I have some great ideas I could share but it would be nice to know your thoughts. Besides you have some great ideas already.

Where would you like to put it and what would you like to use it for? That would help me, also send me a pic of the space you are thinking of.
