Poor baby! My sweet old dog had the same problem. I know there used to be catalogs called Easy Comforts & William Drake, that had stair pads you could put down. Only thing I don't know is what kind of glue they used, or if they would ruin the treads especially if it's a rental. I've seen DYI installations using old Turkish carpets too, run up the stairs. Check Pinterest for that one.

That's what I did. I bought an area rug for the landing and the stair treads to match. I used rug circles that had adhesive to secure them. They weren't that expensive. I bought them at Home Depot. Just be sure to buy one extra in case anything happens as sometimes the patterns are discontinued.
Use new shingles (roofing shingles). Easy to cut and provide traction on steps. Can be glued or stapled, or use double-sided tape. Come in variety of colors. This can be used outdoors on steps as well as inside the home.
