How can I lighten rough cut wall paneling?

I have rough cut pine walls in my kitchen. Someone stained them with what I think is walnut stain. Anyway, they're dark and I'm trying to find a way to lighten them without painting. If anyone can help, it will be very much appreciated.

I would white wash them. Just dilute white paint with water, and dry brush on the surface. You won't loose the character of the wood, but still brighten the space.

I think you may need to be very careful if you are going to whitewash. The stain may be oil based and therefore it will repel the whitewash in patches. I would test an area in an inconspicuous place first.
