How much light is in the room? What other colors are you using in your decor?
What colors make you smile? What makes you feel happy ? That's your answer. If you like black go with it,if you like purple go with it there is no right or wrong it's your home make it your's. Go look in your closet what color stands out what do you absolutely feel like a million bucks in? Start with pot holders if you love them then continue with that color or family of colors. I love color, I love what I call juicy color's like orange, red, turquoise, lime green. That's what makes me happy. I just had LR/DR L shaped, painted organic green by Sherwin Williams and white on baton board. I love my space, next will be the kitchen in orange-red best tangerine. I want just the soffit painted. So it's not too much. I want to enjoy the space we just had the kitchen done and I have hickory cabinets and dark floors. I love pine we have 5 pieces in pine and 2 in cherry, and 2 in teak. I love natural wood. Knotty pine has signs of a life that is no longer every knot is a branch or a scare that tree endured. Now you have it to remind you of life so go for it, it's just accessories in color that make you happy. You don't need us you just need approval and that's not our job you don't need it,you're an adult scared to make the "wrong" choice, as the song says " the sun will come out tomorrow " I don't mean to be harsh but rather inspire you empower you,you know yourself so let that person come out slowly within your safety zone, your home. Have a blessed life☺💒.
Have you tried using a really good degreaser and cleanser? Sometimes the. Natural wood has darkened because of years of not being cleaned properly. I am a big fan of natural wood. I Would try cleaning them first, see if you can lighten them enough to change how you perceive your space. If that doesn't work, your half way to prepping them for being painted.
If you really want to paint them, I suggest antique white, very nice outcome.
That pintrest site suggested by Janet has a lot of great ideas. I liked the whitewashed knotty pine walls with painted cabinets. There's got to be one there that you could fall in love with.
If you want to lighten up your space, then you'll need to paint.
First, prime the knotty pine walls then paint with a neutral color, something like Accessible Beige or Agreeable Gray from Sherwin Williams. I'd also paint the kitchen cabinets as well, something in an off white/bone color. You can then choose a coordinating countertop (something with brown/beige/grey/off white in it that will pull everything together.
Add some accessories and you're all set!
id start with painting the knotty pine an off white. Then a modern grey on the walls. Accessorize with a pop of color that really like.
Rustoleum has "cabinet transformation" kits that are supposed to be good and quite durable. I'm about to redo my cabinets in them. You can go dark-to-light with these kits if you want, and choose a color that will look nice against the knotty pine walls. They have videos on their website. (I am not affiliated with Rustoleum.)
