Tip: No More Slippery Soap Dispenser!

Kim K.
by Kim K.
This is a little hack I thought of one day while doing the dishes. I use an oil/vinegar glass jar to put my Dawn dishwashing detergent in and I was always worried that one day it would slip out of my hands and break. So...I thought of putting 2 of those rubber bands that hold a bunch of asparagus around the bottle and voila! No more slippery bottle! Since my Dawn was blue, I'm glad I actually blue colored rubber bands so it's not so noticeable.

Definitely better looking than the big, ugly bottle I have sitting on my sink! Good idea!

I had this idea years ago and love it sitting on my sink. I will add that the nozzle will start to clog up in the air hole so you must clean it often so the flow of dawn will easily flow when you need it. I have had loads of compliments on this idea. Enjoy yours when you put it on your sink.

I have used a blue vodka bottle for detergent for a decades, and gone thru many different pour spouts, one piece plastic ones, rubber stopper with metal spout,, etc. I found that just pulling them off and soaking overnight in a cup of hot water once a week or so will usually keep them flowing free. Some of the metal spouts will rust, so I usually use the plastic pourers (from the liquor store), or you can usually find stainless steel spouts at restaurant and bar supply stores.

Thanks Sue. I have already noticed my nozzle starting to clog and I will try the pipe cleaner trick from Widow2long2003 to unclog it. Thanks ladies!

This entire thing is one of those palm-slap-to-the-forehead-whilst-muttering-"duh"-under-your-breath moments!!!! I have three of those bottles and never once thought of using the extra one for my dishwashing liquid!!! Thanks!!!

Love this idea! I'm going to add rubber bands to my shower gel and shampoo bottles too for a better grip.

I'm going to get my rubber bands right now! I don't drop my shampoo/conditioner bottles often, but whenever I do, it's always right on my toes! OUCH!

SO SIMPLE AND SO SMART. wHY DIDN'T I EVER THINK OF THIS?

I put my dishwashing detergent in a Soft Soap dispenser. Don't need to pick it up - just pump the top. Added bonus: it's plastic!! But your bottle is prettier!!!

  • Kim K. Kim K. on Jan 14, 2017

That's a good idea too, Annadele! Sometimes I buy the Dawn Ultra or whatever it's called that is already in a pump bottle.

gr8 thinking ladies!!! Tx for sharing. I bought a bottle of olive oil which when you take the lid off, a rubber or silicone pouring spout pops out. Going to try that. love the cleaning tip too and understand the messing and wiping up the mess...... when it's difficult to bend cleaning up is a problem so an EXTRA BIG THANX!!!!!

That is a really great idea.. unfortunately to late for me.. mine slipped about 6 months ago. But I will do it for a new one when I get another.. I so hate the way the plastic bottle looks and I want it handy not under the sink. Thanks for sharing.

Also, you're in the shower, getting a measure of shampoo or whatever out of the Sam sized bottle (because you're frugal, of course), & it slips out of your grasp, off the shelf, can't catch the thing, your husband hears the awful noise (to him), and yells, "Are you Ok?" Now, he's a bit hard of hearing, & with the water running, the fan, I'm yelling "yes... I just dropped the soap thing." Only he can't quite hear me...so we yell back & forth a few more times, before there's a knock at the door, & there he is (with his 2 replaced hips, mind you) worried to death that "I have fallen & I can't get up..." Please pray for us, I know we scare each other with the communication thing, even though at times we laugh alot too! And yes we have all the fall precaution stuff in place...it was just the soap....

OMG! We are the same way when our son takes a shower and drops the shampoo bottle because he has elpilepsy and we are afraid he's had a seizure and fell! Your message cracked me up!

I use the bottles for mouthwash. I have it on a plate on my bathroom counter along with two shot glasses. When we have guests they love it.

I use a refillable plastic pump bottle that had dish soap, the rubber bands will help, thank you for that idea. On the counter next to the stove I have a beautiful bottle of olive oil with a metal pour spout, rubber bands would be perfect for that.
