What can I use this rack for to enhance our storage?

A friend was moving and gave me a plain white storage rack. It's sturdy and heavy. We live in a small beach cottage with EXTREMELY limited space. we have only one closet/laundry room and also no kitchen storage either (3 cabinets and 2 drawers) so debating on where and how I can use this rack. Anyone have any ideas for either? Any input would be greatly appreciated!! Please ignore my untidiness as still rearranging things!

Depending on it's width, I'd sit it where the black one now sits and park the coffee maker and microwave on it. If the black one will fit. I'd anchor it on top of the mini frig for more storage space. It's all a matter of the size of what you have to work with.

Do you have any place to utilize it in a covered area outside?

if it is strong enough It looks strong; really pretty. Too pretty to put outside but if it is strong you could put a pretty wood board on a shelf and make a microwave cart from it even a piece of glass.

Buy inexpensive curtains and clip to the wire frame. Hides any clutter :-)

I boight an expandable rack & put in cabinet next to pots. The lids stand nicely in ascending diameter in the rck. put lid side in space between rungs and lids stand up nice & organized.

It looks like one I have (mine is black). It should come apart so you could choose your # of shelves. I bought mine when a wine store went under for $25. You're lucky to have it. They are made for commercial use & run $260. at a minimum.

Perhaps you could hang some hooks on it for coffee mugs and place your coffee maker on another shelf. You could get some small decorative containers with covers for your regular sugar and perhaps some of the splendor packets, etc.

We live in a small space with limited storage so improvising is essential to maximize storage there is & any space that can be used by thinking outside the box & being creative using racks & shelves of all kind in unconventional ways.

Think in terms of going "up". I noticed in pic space over refrigerator where one of the shelves could be hung from ceiling to max that space with white wire chain. Use as a shelf unit where it can be used. Use remainder of shelves to maybe suspend from ceiling. Flip upside down with lip edge up to serve as lid shelf & underneath same shelf as a pot rack. Wire shelves can also be hung vertical & used to hang measuring spoons, cups, graters etc on - use one sided or dbl sided by where you mount or hang it. Sometimes they work as extra shelf in bottom cabinet. "L" brackets or wood braces mounted on inside side walls of cabinet works for this.

Never throw out a perfectly good wire shelf or rack. :)

I have one of those, which I put in the other half of my closet. I put a white kitchen paneling (Lowes or Home Depot) on each shelf. This stabilizes everything I put on it. This has really made a difference.

Maybe, if it comes apart which I think it does, take out the black rack, and fit the white one in that area. Get some "S " Hooks at home depot or lowes or walmart and maybe hang pots you don't use all the time but need out there. Or use it for an additional pantry for stuff you don't need everyday. I also have used IKEA's 3 pack of baskets for towels, sheets and even tools. They come in white, black and I believe mint green. A three pack is $ 14.99. Their stuff is not a bulky as other baskets and they hold a lot. They would fit on there just fine. I live in a manufactured home and I have come up with a lot of storage ideas and I got a lot of hints from the internet. In your drawers you can use tension rods as seperators and you also can also use them for light shelving. I used the 16-24 inch ones from Target and they hold up to about 4 pounds of weight.

I would put some thin wood shelves over the wire ones. I have found things sit better than on the wire. Put it wherever you want it. Maybe spray paint it to match the walls.

  • All great suggestions here. Once you rearrange things, and it finds its new home, I would use it to store small appliances, cookbooks, kitchen decor - a fancy bakers rack effect. I would also purchase bins or baskets for things like kitchen towels, aluminum foil, plastic wrap, sandwich and storage bags. Might help you free up space elsewhere in the kitchen. And look cute at the same time.

I have seven of these in different sizes and one on the way. Latest one I got on Amazon for $54.95 & free shipping. 84"tall x 48"wide x 18" deep. It's going in the garage but I use them in the kitchen and closets for all my storage. They make vinyl mats to fit and I got plastic bins for small items. I love them and even have 2 carts for movable islands. My kitchen is small so having wheels makes it easy to move things about.

I would reconfigure the shape of the wire rack to fit beside the door where the black unit is, and raise the little fridge up at least 12" with a box with a drawer in it and also build out a shelf for the microwave, or move the microwave to a shelf on the wire rack (now located by the door) . Where the little fridge is, you could have a shelf or an upper cabinet. Restore is a great place to get things like that.

It looks like the hinge can be switched to the right side. If so they can move the big fridge over to the wall. move the little fridge and micowave over to the left of the big fridge. Make a stand with drawers to lift the little fridge up to a height that makes putting things into and pulling them out of the microwave oven is comfortable AND Safe.

Move your fridge to the left if you can. Fridge extension cord if necessary. Then adapt between both fridges, raising shelves where necessary. If the rack will is insecure for lack of bottom shelf, secure to the wall ( which many of us with kids do anyway).

Remember, too, that these shelves are not fixed in place. You can do a shallow shelf for canned goods, tall for cereals, etc

    • Jcraw Jcraw on Jan 13, 2017

braindead. Then adapt unit between fridges. If the rack feels insecure, it's easy to secure to the wall.

My mom has two of these in her small apartment for storage and as a hanging closet. These shelving units use legs come in sections, you could conceivably split this into two shorter units. Use the one on wheels (if it has them, otherwise add them) as a movable kitchen island. Just add a piece of plywood (painted or finished, your choice) to the top as your countertop, thin wood or even use fabric to cover three sides of the bottom, and a nice curtain to the fourth side as your 'door'. Adds much needed workspace wherever you need it in the kitchen: next to the stove when prepping big dinners, the table for buffet style dining, etc. while adding storage. Use the other part of the shelving to organize your closet, mount it high on the wall somewhere for off season clothing storage or other storage.

I also added shelves in my hallway between bedroom and bathroom just above the doorframes, lots of storage in otherwise wasted 12" of space.

Try to make a Bakers rack out of it. Remove some of the shelves use them elsewhere. For the shelves , lowes has laminated boards different sizes that would fit all the way across the shelf and hold things better like suggested. Check them out at Lowes they look like butcher block. For an upper shelf get some nice plant hangers attach for the upper shelf put the wire shelf back on it cover it with wood and use the "s" hooks as mentioned to hang cups or pots. Look up butcher racks and it will be clear.

When you build this there doesn't need to be a shelf on the floor. Put the bottom shelf about 12 to 15 inches up the poles. Using the floor as a bottom gives you extra shelf at the top.

Racks in a bath .bathroom will do wonders to put towels

I have several sets of these racks. they are easy to put together, hold a lot. you can get wheel kits to make them mobile. I put my shelves in the basement to hold seasonal decorations and camping gear. my basement had a problem with water intrusion these shelves made it easy clean up as apposed to wooden ones.
