How do I clean tarnished spoons?

I have some old silver spoons my grandma gave me. They are terribly tarnished.
How do I clean them and keep them from tarnishing again? I want to put them on display in a shadow box, so I won't be able to polish them all the time.

Try rubbing plain white toothpaste on them with a soft cloth then rinse with water and dry.

I use Tarnex to clean my silver, then shine it up with some silver polish. Unless you wrap them in clear plastic wrap or put them in a zip loc bag, they will tarnish again though. If you can manage to clean them and then hang them up without touching them (i.e. use a paper towel to hold them), they should only need re-cleaned about once or twice a year.

I agree with Janet! I use white toothpaste (not gel) and a damp tooth brush on silver, gold jewelry, copper, and brass items I sell on Ebay. Even polishes the gems on jewelry without any harm. Problem with Tarnex and similar cleaners, they remove some of the metal along with the tarnish and can pit the item. This will tarnish them quicker. People that have used Tarnex to clean coins noticed etching and pitting.

Thank you Janet and William. My sister and I split our grandmother's silverware and wondered how to clean it as it is extremely tarnished. Can't wait to try the toothpaste method of cleaning it!

Ive tried the toothpaste method. It does help, but not for long,. I wonder if they are too badly tarnished? They were a wedding gift to my grandma, and she got married in 1926! But thanks for the suggestions!

There is no way to keep them from tarnishing. Use Sharon's tip for storing them. Tarnish is a form of oxidation. As soon as they come in contact with air, they begin to tarnish.

I use a silver polish like Wright's Silver Cream. I'd think toothpaste might be too abrasive, and I'd NEVER use a dip on heirloom pieces! Use a good polish and some elbow grease. Rinse in hot water and dry each piece very well. I buy Wright's Silver Cream in my local market. You will have to re-polish your pieces, so they should be reasonably accessible and the dampness in your environment will matter. I display several generations of silver baby cups and I polish them 2 or 3 times per year.

I agree with Hillela. I especially like it because it's cheap. You do need to store them properly or they will tarnish again.

Clean them with a silver polish cloth. One side is for cleaning and the other is for polishing. Line your display box with anti-tarnish paper which absorbs moisture. I was a sterling silver jewelry re-seller and the paper works fabulously.

I have cleaned my silver for years by simply laying a sheet of aluminum foil on the bottom of a sink of warm water. I add about a teaspoon of salt and swish it around. Within minutes my silver is as shiny and clean as new! Hope this helps.
