How can I hide this paneling mess?

We have an old house. In the dining room it has paneling. On 2 of the walls at the bottom they must have run out of paneling and wanted to use all they had so for 31 1/2 inches they reversed the paneling. So instead of the lines running up and down they run sideways. For the 38 years we have lived here I have done wall paper to hide the mess. Anybody have anything else I can do?

We painted ours.. looks better but still don't like it so i'm thinking of texturing it with stucco or thick paint with sand it it and swirl it on.. hey can't be any worse...hu...

You can fill in the grooves with drywall patching compound. Sand smooth and lightly sand all the paneling to remove any shine. Prime with KILZ,BIN, or Zinsser primer, then paint with any color you choose.

I did the same thing William did...filled the grooves, sander, primed and painted. No one knew it was paneling.

Also, in one room. I used textured, paintable wallpaper. Looks great.

Bite the bullet and drywall after you take down the paneling.

You can celebrate the different area- paint chalkboard paint over that section, or a wall mural. That way, it can look like you did it intentionally and take ownership of it!

You can also upholster the entire wall or just a portion. My husband does this for the wealthy, but it's doable for the rest of us. Staple cotton batting up 1st,. Presew panels together for each wall. You staple up fabric stretching it as you go so it is taut, much like carpet. Finish edges with cording covered in same fabric or get creative. It's easier than wallpaper and most people think that's what it is.
