Reclaimed Thailand Teak

I want to build a piece of furniture out of reclaimed teak wood from Thailand. How do I get the washed out paint look. My Wife Shabby Chic but she doesn't think she can get this look.

  • There are a variety of ways and mediums to obtain the distressed look. Chalk paints, inks (I've used India Ink) and stains. Latex paints can be watered down. A brush on then wipe or sand off works well.

The first thing is to stain the wood the colour you want to show through. Then apply thinned coats of paints which you can then either wipe off or sand off until you get the effect you like. The "aged" dirty finish is usually achieved by using a tinted brown poly over the whole thing or you can make an aging glaze and apply that. If you decide to use chalk paints, remember they are very porous and then you will have to wax them and that needs to be reapplied over time. Better to apply an aging glaze over chalk paint and then a clear poly over the entire thing. It will be quite a bit of work either way. I hope it works out for you.

@The Shabby Chic Man Usually because of the wait times and the fact that some surgeries that are approved in US are still consider experimental here. Like CCSVI treatment for Multiple Sclerosis. Canada has not approved it here for treatment of MS but there are clinics all over the US doing it.

Make sure that you dry brush the paint on or you'll have more work than is necessary.

first thing is to paint the wood...sand off and distress it with a chain (hitting it) and try other things to get that stress then stain it over the paint...use different stains on the different colors to give it a more intense look.....just play and use everyone's suggestions all together....please post a pick soon so we can see

Try a Miss Mustard Seed paint , it is specifically made to chip off and look worn using thin coats, dark waxes and sanding. A look you will not get with regular paints. She has an excellent web site, www.missmustardseed.com

Thank you. When Canadian goes to the US or other countries for surgeries, it is usually because the wait times here are unbelievable. I was even considering it myself, but hey I am disabled and can't afford such high surgery rates. I guess it is only the rich.
