What is the best way to prepare butcher block counter for use?

I am very confused about the best way to prepare a butcher block counter before using it for food prep - not necessarily cutting on it? I purchased Numerar beech wood butcher block and prepared it with tung oil which they recommended. Was this the wrong thing to use? I did quite a bit of research on this and it was mixed as to what to use. I read that mineral oil works too, but soaks in very rapidly and must be reapplied often. Help?
