Trimming the Tree-Creating the Look of a Natural Growth Christmas Tree

Do you dream of a Christmas tree that looks as if its been foraged from its natural habitat but all you find are obesely rotund, over-pruned Christmas trees? With some selective trimming you can return your tree to a more natural state + let its beauty shine through.
Unlike today's over-pruned specimens, I prefer a more natural Christmas tree, with open branches and a natural growth pattern.
Recreating the look is easy by simply removing the overgrowth.

I really like this. I'm from Germany and we use this really open kind of tree because the ornaments hang so much nicer.

I have wanted so bad to attempt to do this to my artificial tree, I'm just not sure how much to trim it and it wasn't cheap even though I bought it several years ago I don't want to ruin it and have to spend that kind of money again =) I also have searched the web like crazy trying to figure out a way to make the trunk of my tree look like bark with no luck...
