What is the best way to update my fireplace?

Question

I have a town home built in the late 70's. the fireplace is surrounded by black slate and with slate on floor in front. The actual fireplace is surrounded with a dark wood frame. There is no mantle. The firescreen is that bright brassy color with glass. Question- What is the best way to update this fireplace? Should I buy a new mantle piece and install or is there a less costly way to update? I am at work so I do not have a photo! I will follow up with a picture.
