How can I add space to our tiny or nonexistent closet space?

Our home was built in the mid-50s and closets are small or almost not existent. The two guest rooms have bigger closets than our master bedroom. What can I do to create more clothing storage without going to an outside storage facility or using our basement and plastic boxes? Please, help me not lose my mind or my religion.icon

How many 'guests' do you expect? Turn one into a walk in closet with a spare futon or pull out bed.

I also live in a 50's built home, and the closets are not the bi fold door covering the complete 15 ft wall type. i have about 3 ft of floor space. I went vertical with a wire cube system. I don't have but 2 or 3 sets "fancy affair dress up clothes" these are hanging in garment bags (breathable ones) in my basement. most of my everyday wear gets folded and cubed, the "smalls" are in a chest of drawers, as are the pj's. there is space next to the cubes about 6-8 inches so my totes and handbags are hanging where i can get them.

Put your bed up on bed risers. I put mine up on 4" risers, which were obtained at Wal-Mart at ridiculously low price of $4.88 for a set of 4. Put the bed up, and slide boxes or suitcases, whatever under the bed. I have a queen bed but put a king-sized bed ruffle or skirt so it drapes to a perfect level so as not to let the stuff under bed show.

I'd turn the smaller guest room into a dressing room. You can arrange hanging racks yourself, get a bunch of armadios from Ikea, get the fancy type from the Container Store, or go really upscale & have them built by a cabinet maker. Since I live in a country with no closets, I turned one of my attic rooms into a dressing room, & now have space for all seasons....now if I just had the money to move the washer & dryer up there it would be perfect!

I agree you live in your home 24/7 guest for a few days so either take one of those closets or convert entire room into a dressing area. I hate to say it but my walkin closet is too small I thought I had a small closet in previous home, oh no here I have to share with hubby. As soon as one of my young men leave it won't be an empty guest room it will be mine! I am going to finally have my own space. Girl why have 2 rooms empty most of the year and you with clothes in basement? Smell the coffee it's your house your space use it how it best meets your life style. Don't loose your beliefs due to this ,maybe to why were we created, but not this when you have been given this blessing. Take it and run. Make a space for yourself. Hey you make guest to comfortable they won't leave! OK have a blessed day.
