I would use a Dremel tool. I've used it to permanently etch designs onto vases and glass coffee cups, many tips for different textures and thickness of etching lines. Wear goggles, gloves and a face mask, glass dust is not something you want to breath in or get into your eyes! I taped my design to the inside of the object and etched from the surface, wipe clean and pull off tape-done!

Etch Glass in 5 Minutes
I did "memory glasses" for the Prom Dinner for my granddaughter and her guests. Never did it before. Used etching cream, a brush, and stick-on stencil.
Easy and not time consuming at all. Planning on doing it for next granddaughter this year. I used wine goblets and after etching and cleaning well, I used them for the dessert. Saw one a few weeks ago, and it has held up well for a year with use.
Etching cream and stick on stencils are available at your hobby store. Stencils are reusable. You can also get a glue to hold stencils on if you use a non-stick variety.
I searched hobby store and on line until I found the size of stencil and design that would work for my application.
etching cream is great, but as an artist I am doing this free style scenes. anymore ideas?
