I really love open shelving but have always questioned how the actual shelving would hold up over time (weight, environment). Stair treads were the answer for me. I don't think anyone would question their strength to tolerate weight. I like the rolled edge which can be installed facing the back wall or to the front . I installed the rolled edge to the front then rounded the front corners to soften the look. Cost for each tread +-$10. They come in several lengths and can been stained or painted.
I installed the shelves so that I could reach the upper shelf without using a footstool. I added a smaller shelf below for my everyday glassware.
