How do I refinish a small brass artifact that is badly discolored?

It had dried wax on it and boiling water was used to remove the wax; now the brass is discolored.

Cut a lemon in half dip it into baking soda, rube it all over the brass item. then wipe it clean the lemon and baking soda makes it shine.

or you might try cheap toothpaste and a soft cloth it works for many materials brings them up like new

I have used 0000 steel wool, it gets rid of grime and dirt without scratching the brass. I don't know if it would work on your problem though.

coat it with ketchup. Let it sit a few minutes and rinse.

use a brass or copper polish (durgalit or brasso) they work wonders

Tried all Above and fond the one that worked best 0n 100 year old outdoor pendant light and on newer items -Cost about $2 ( I use on silver, stainless, copper, etc I have tested all of the above and found that nothing competes with Bar Keepers Friend. Most importantly clean toothbrush or cloth often because you will just redeposit the tarnish back on the object if cleaning tool is not frequently clear of any residue. U can use soft style or powder. Too much water decreases the effectiveness of cleaning. Lastly you could try a little linseed oil to polish when finished but be sure to wait 5 min then rub off all excess to give brilliant shine without allowing new build up. Worst case scenario is you can touch up with the exact color metallic spray paint.

Once cleaned and polished, buy some Clear Coat from an automotive section. It will not discolour the object or yellow. Spray the object with a couple of coats - you won't have to polish again. This is used be pros.

The fastest and easiest for me is Bar Keepers Friend. Make a paste similair to tooth paste. Let it sit for a couple of minutes and then scrub with 0000 STEEL WOOL, WORKS GREAT. Twila Beaufort, SC
