Repairing sheetrock that was covered with wallpaper

The wallpaper in our guest bathroom was not properly removed and has been pulled off randomly in places (thank you small grandchildren!). Some of the wallpaper also pulled the "white" part of the sheetrock off as well. How do I repair this before I paint the walls? I am NOT putting wallpaper back up. Thanks!

Use drywall mud and spread over the area that is exposed. Sand until smooth, Then paint. If you need any instruction about what to use the hardware store people can help.

Debbie gave you the right advice! You need a trowel for spreading out the mud, in thin coats. Then a screen sander. You do thin coats let dry. Sand. But you keep doing the coats until it is smooth. If there had been sizing underneath the wall paper it wouldn't have pulled off the sheet rock.

After sanding the drywall patch.....prime before you paint

I also prefer wet sanding with a sponge sander - less dust, but not a hard skill to do.

Do not use compound first! Once the outer layer of paper is removed so is you're vapor barrier. The brown paper underneath will bubble up and loosen from the gypsum wallboard when wet by compound. The first step is to seal the paper with an acrylic primer/sealer and then compound as much as you like. I worked as a carpenter for 43 years and I know of where I speak.
