DIY Log Reindeer - Our New Additions To Our Family!

We have three new additions to our family this December! I owe it all to Hubby for getting them here and I am so excited to share them with you!
First things first. How did these new additions come to be?
The other day, while browsing around on Itsy Bits and Pieces, I saw a few small reindeer on the table in one of her pictures. The inspiration hit me instantly. I liked them…….. wanted some of my own, but wanted to “tweak” them a little bit. After talking it over with Hubby, we ventured off to our nearby creek to gather the supplies for our reindeer. After about an hour of Hubby sawing and drilling, our three new additions were here! I can’t tell you how much I love them! The plan was to make two large reindeer for the front of our house, but Hubby surprised me with a small birchwood reindeer to put in the house! Love that man!
How it all came together……..
To make the bigger reindeer, Hubby cut a log in half for their “bodies”.
Then, he cut four legs for each reindeer from these branches.
The picture below shows you the pieces you need (minus the neck and antlers) for one reindeer.
To add the legs to the body, Hubby drilled holes on the underside of the log.
Then, he whittled down the branches (legs) to fit inside the holes tight.
Our new additions are coming together.
For the head and the neck of the reindeer, Hubby did the same thing. He drilled a hole on the underside of the head-piece and then whittled down another branch (the neck) to fit inside that. He also drilled a hole on the top of the body for the bottom part of the neck to fit in.
To help reinforce all the pieces, Hubby used adhesive inside the holes.
To make the smaller reindeer, Hubby did all the same things, but with smaller birchwood logs and branches. For the antlers on all the reindeer, he drilled two small holes on the top of their heads and stuck in two small twigs we found by the creek.
These new little additions have been the best addition to our front porch and the little guy inside fit in perfectly with all the birchwood decorations I made this year. Thank you Hubby!
