Hi Lovelies,
Welcome to my post about how I transformed a hideous old chair, into a spectacular new accent piece with just two cans of spray paint. Seriously guys, this is the easiest DIY project EVER!
So, I came into an this seemingly ugly old chair because a neighbor simply lacked creativity and vision. Her chair was a little battered and scuffed, and the awful black paint it was coated in was wearing off. She abandoned it as trash and of course being the DIY-obsessed-borderline-hoarder that I am, I scolded her for being wasteful, took one good look at the chair in all it’s potential glory and decided right then and there that it was coming home with me!

I had a easy project in mind. As I’m quite a lazy DIYer: I would simply give my new chair new life with a little spray paint. I would make it more vibrant and exciting to look at by painting it in bright blues and overlapping the two colors to create an ombre effect. Click the video above to see how I did it or simply read the following quick instructions.
I started by completely taping off the parts of the chair that I did not want painted ( in this case: the legs).
I then moved my project into the crisp night air to ensure proper ventilation for the spray paint process (because day time DIY paint projects are virtually impossible when you have small children). I laid out my canvas dropcloth and sat my chair on it, put on my mask and gloves (seriously I wouldn’t skip this step), and began to spray paint my chair. I made sure to shake the cans profusely for the recommended amount of time before actually spraying it on the chair. This step is extremely important in making sure that you get even coverage without any paint drips. I started with Satin Aqua from the top-- from about 8 inches away-- using a swift back and forth motion.
Rustoleum 2x Ultra Cover Paint + Primer Satin Aqua
This is what my chair looked like after more coverage. At this stage, it was time for my next color.
I then I transitioned to Satin Lagoon about half way down the chair, and with the same back and forth motion, I slightly overlapped the Satin Aqua to create the ombre effect and continued evenly distributing color until I got to the end of the chair.
Rustoleum 2x Ultra Cover Paint + Primer Satin
Adding the finishing touches.
I waited for the paint to dry, then I took of the masking tape and my chair was complete! You guys…I know I performed the task myself, but I literally could not believe the transformation that occurred from using just a little paint. My new chair was so vibrant and inviting.
It immediately became a family favorite.
Here is a side by side comparison of the amazing transformation.
I really hope you enjoyed this post and it inspires you to go and create something extraordinary using this simple technique. Have a question about this project?
How did you avoid overspray getting onto the top when you were doing the seat of the chair? It's BEAUTIFUL! I'd love to try it on something, but not sure I could avoid a spattered mess
