I suggest walking through you your neighborhood and see who is already successful at growing their own rose bushes, and then, introduce yourself as someone new roses... It could be very helpful to learn from someone who can also come see your garden, and make recommendations. I started out with one of those Sunday color circulars from Michigan Bulb. Had 10 of 12 survive transplant. Used Rose food and ignored them a little. One thing I always did was get rid of the dead blooms and keep an eye out for bugs. Aphids or ant cows are the worst problem I can think of. Suck the juice out of plants. You can get rid of them with some warm soapy water. If you don't mind going with chemicals, the best is Sevin. Best rose for size has been Princess Anne or maybe it was Queen Anne. Large pink blooms. Most roses grow well in any are of the USA but some do better in one zone or another. I'm in central VA
Search on line for a local rose society in your area. You can also find a society local to you on the American Rose Society's website. There you can find the name of a consulting rosarian nearby. Consulting rosarians are experienced long time rose gardeners who can answer any of your questions and are happy to spread knowledge of rose culture! I have always had roses and they have always thrived on neglect lol. When I prune them I prune to about 7 inches from the soil. Always dead head the old blooms and watch for fungal diseases never water in the evening and watch for aphids. You can get chemical sprays for aphids but a ltr of water with 4 drops of dish washing liquid and a teaspoon of vegetable oil works or you can squash them. When you plant them make sure you have a lot of organic matter in the soil as in aged manure and compost. You can buy rose fertiliser but I have never used it and my neighbours have always been jealous of the size and number of blooms my plants have
