looking for a post on how to keep ice melted off steps and sidewalks

I believe you mean to melt ice? We use salt made for melting ice and we sprinkle enough to leave a layer which keeps the ice away.

Move out of snow zone....????? HA! To us here in Atlanta, we get such bad ice storms, we hate the stuff! We need a big, big heat gun to blow on the ice!
