How can I make a homemade bird cage?

I'm scheming to make a hanging parakeet cage. Have searched the web only to find that the designs that take my breath away are priced out of my comfort zone and often have the bars spaced too wide for smaller birds. The cages that are affordable either don't come in the exact size needed or they are much too utilitarian.
Excited to get your practical and fanciful ideas as well as any leads on where to purchase any supplies!

I love this idea, turn an old lamp ( you can easily pick up from a furniture thrift shop) into a beautiful bird cage: http://www.hometalk.com/diy/outdoor/garden/turning-a-floor-lamp-into-a-birdcage-stand-3658993?expand_all_questions=1

đŸ˜ƒ Thank you for sharing this post with me!

What a beautiful, personalized bird cage! I happen to have a lot of extra lamps. This really gets tbe imagination thinking. LOL.

      Appreciate all your encouragement!

      God Bless

  • I think the suggestion that Hillela provided is STUNNING! But before you invest you time and money, my girlfriend's vet specifically told me to have a square or rectangle shaped cage, should I want to change from what she has. I took the canary after she passed as the bird knew me plus I wanted her. When birds get frightened, they retreat to a corner. If the cage is round it stresses them out and have a shorter life span. I have also read it can make them crazy. Luckily we learned this many years ago when my brother bought love birds for his girlfriend. Do some research and talk with your vet.

Thank you so much for your care and concern, and for taking your time to write! I will speak with my vet :-)

    • So welcome! All the decor ideas can easily be transferred to a square or rectangle cage, and no matter what you do, it certainly will be an upgrade. Don't forget to put in a mirror or two. If they are single birds, they think they have "company" - and oh so fun to watch!
