I use a 1.5" nylon bristle paint brush to dust my 75 year old cuckoo clock! Never add water, 2x a year I will use a furniture oil. After oiling, I'll use a new 1.5" brush to remove any oil I accidentally pooled. Wash brushes with shampoo to remove dirt & oil and let dry. The 6 month old brush used for oil goes to the workshop, and new brush becomes the duster. I don't use toothbrushes or vacuum, it's too great of a chance to scratch the clock, as it's made with natural soft wood from Germany that is intricately carved.

Just dusting with a brush suspends the dust in the air, causes static electricity on the item that attracts dust. I use a small paint brush and spray a little WD40 on it. The WD40 attracts the dust, puts a mild waterproof coating on the object, and negatively charges the item to repel dust.
