This tree is made from hickory nuts, glue, paint and cardboard. Shape the cardboard (I used a manilla file folder) into a cone of desired size. Staple the joints and trim the bottom so that it stands straight and is sturdy. (The top point needs to be snipped slighty so it will allow a nesting place for the one hickory nut that will rest there.) Use thoroughly dried (not green) hickory nuts. Place the tree base on a sturdy surface (setting it inside a shallow cardboard box lid is helpful because it can be moved aside easily while the glue on each row of nuts is drying.) Using glue, glue the bottom row of hickory nuts around the bottom of the cone. ALLOW GLUE TO DRY THOROUGHLY. Only after this row is totally dry, glue a second row of hickory nuts on top of this one. Repeat this process (being certain that the glue has thoroughly dried on each row before continuing to the next row) until you reach the top. Pace one lone hickory nut at the top. (Glue guns were unheard of when this tree was made--using a glue gun would be much easier than my 1980's method described above!!) After all hickory nuts are secured, paint entire tree and base thoroughly with spray paint. Decorate by gluing tiny ornaments around the tree and by draping beads over the tree. This tree was created with nuts that came from the tree in my parents' front yard...close to 40 years ago! It still survives and brings back many fond memories.
