Shoe polish as a tinter on paste wax?

Jann
by Jann
I thought I read somewhere that someone tried and was successful with tinting their paste wax with shoe polish to get that aged effect when using it on chalk painted furniture?
Can this be done? Also, second question- this is my first attempt with paste wax is there a way to make it softer to apply?
Many thanks!

  • I wouldn't try it for fear of product incompatibility. Also, it is not very durable. For best results, stick with the tried and true products that are designed for the specific purpose they are intended to be used for. Just because someone said they did it on the internet does not mean you should!!! LOL

Thank you Kass. Great advice. Do you have any tips on the second part of my question making the paste wax easier to work with? Jann
  • Personally, I am not a fan of wax. It makes any project very difficult to ever re paint. I prefer to use topcoats or sealers. Check with a professional paint store (SWms or BMoore) for a recommendation. They will need to know what is currently on the surface in order to give you good advice. They will also ask what sheen you want to achieve.

@WallsTreat Studio/ Kass Wilson So that is true that when you wax, refinishing it later is difficult? I have heard that and also thought about using a matte finish sealer. Glad I haven't yet ventured into waxing yet. It seems to be in all the posts anymore. Thanks so much for your advice.

it depends which kind of wax your talking about? CeCe's wax I put on card board before I use it and leave it for several hours. The card board absorbs the oil. I also smoosh it in the card board. I also use a glaze, or water and brown paint then wipe it off, if I use glaze and paint, the glaze is more workable. Then I seal with a clear wax, or sealer. If you get to much on and want it off I use denatured alcohol, or green paint thinner. It will remove wax, or clear wax over the aging wax will take it off.

Hi Sherrie, thanks for your response. I'm wondering what kind of sealer you like to use? I find using thisaste wax is too much work and bothering my hands (have some arthritis in them) . So, I'm looking for a good way to seal chalk painted furniture without using wax. Thanks! Happy Holidays! Jann

They have a satin finish in CeCe, or a flat or egg shell polyurethane sealer. I use both with good results. I always use this on the tops of anything I refinish because I want it to be durable, 30 days curing time this is important to remember. Wax takes at least that long if not longer.
