You can try blood meal as they do not care for the odor, however like any deterrents it will have to be re-applied all the time.

I tuck tufts of my dog's hair into the dirt (he's a husky so the hair is always plentiful) but this has to be re-applied often, like every week or two. I also use river rocks and colorful pieces of broken dishes or tiles on top of the soil.

I use ground red or cayenne pepper. I used pepper flakes once and they sprouted! Just meant for weeding for me. You can also cut a piece of screen to sit on top of the dirt, this will prevent the squirrels and chipmunks from digging in the dirt.

Some animals hate the smell of mothballs. I live in an area outside Baltimore MD that is infested with squirrels, and a rogue squirrel cost me $1,000 including inside damage when he invaded my house as well as his removal. Have had squirrels give birth in my attic. Hate the little buggers!

Fine grain chicken wire around the plant might be a deterrent. I had the wire installed on my attic vents and haven't had a squirrel invasion since.

I use mothballs in my garden also (see reply above). Right now I have a damn mouse problem. The heck with repellant I want the damn things dead. However, I don't want to use dangerous poisons that could harm my pets. I use the following formula: one part sugar, one part flour or cornmeal and one part baking soda if I have some nuts on hand I chop them finely and add to the mix (an added enticement). Mix well and put on jar lids or something similar. You will see more of them but be patient after a couple of days they should be gone. What happens is mice and rats can't pass gas (dogs and cats can). When the mixture hits their stomachs it forms a lot of gas causing organ rupture and bye bye mousie. May be cruel but the disease and damage they do us is worse...remember Hanta virus from years back? Being that squirrels are also rodents, should work on them also. I tried barriers too but that just encouraged them to be more creative. I plan on keeping this on hand and a constant supply in basement and attic where they are most likely to enter.
