You can get some fun litter box mats: http://petslady.com/articles/litter_mats_61309

I would get a micro-fiber dish drying mat.

How about a boot mat with a low lip to contain any litter that might get kicked out? Could help keep the area cleaner and protect your floor as well. The mat could be easily dumped out and washed if need be.

Even though I don't know if you have covered or open boxes; a rubber mat that overlaps the little box litter by at least a foot. If the box is closed in that of course requires less coverage.

One that also has some type of raised pattern to allow the cats to walk and lose the litter sticking to their feet before leaving the mat.

We still found one of our cats seemed to have dragged the litter into other rooms before depositing the debris. Eventually went full outdoor cats and now they come and go and no little boxes. Of course our street is slow/little traffic so, they are fairly safe.

Dollar stores carry cat litter rubber pads in my area. They come in half rounds which I use in the front of the litter and in rectangles which I use under the box.

I love the cost, I am fighting with the expensive ones I just bought. What Dollar store do you go to?

    • Chatycms Chatycms on Feb 07, 2017

Both Dollarama and Dollar Tree here in Canada have them. I noticed that Walmart carried the same brand.

  • this will sound strange but I use a hot water heater tray. they come in round or square, different sizes. Some are metal, some are plastic - fairly inexpensive and easy to clean.

I put down a transparent sheet of plastic, (2mm thick painters drop cloth style) much bigger than the litter box on the carpet. I then put a regular sized heavy cotton bath mat in front of the box. I pre-cut several plastic sheets to have them on hand in case they get soiled. Cheap enough, and the cotton bath mat can go into the washer. My cat sometimes goes all 4 paws into the box, but then pees on the outside, so the plastic sheet has been very practical.

Our senior cat used to do the same thing. My husband altered a large plastic storage bin (18w x 32l x 13h) by cutting a u-shaped piece out of one long side so the cats could enter without jumping. The cat easily fits inside the box, the urine stays in the box and we didn't have to mop up anymore. I keep a dollar store tightly woven rug underneath to catch the kitty litter off their feet. It's been working for years.

Oh, have you tried a dog? They go outside the house. They are also so very happy to see you and will do anything to please you! They WANT to please you as well.

Plastic to protect the carpet and then top that with fake astro turf. The roughness of the "grass" will clean the cats feet as (s)he exits and trap the litter sack to paws

Just buy a storage container use the container for toys or choose and use the lid for the litter box

I have a dog crate that has a removable tray for the bottom. When the cat came into the family, all of a sudden we had litter flying daily. I slid the tray from the dog crate under the box and it catches more than it misses. Worked out great. If I need the crate for any reason, I just pad the bottom with a blanket cuz the tray works so good for the litter. You can find them at garage sales and Estate sales all the time!

Our cat got into tossing litter all over the room. It would fly clear across the room. I knew I had to do something. I was going to make a screen to block it as she kicked. My husband had another idea. He made a frame and we stapled and glued the foam board I had bought for the screen tot he sides and bottom. I decided to make a top and glued some thin strips of lightweight wood so it wouldn't fold in on itself if she jumped on top. To decorate we used contact paper, a dowel and a patch of material to give her privacy. We still find some litter which naturally falls off her feet in the carpet outside the door but the flying litter is now contained. She couldn't wait to use her chateau! She was trying to get in before I had her litter box set in there.

I've got 3 of my litter boxes hidden under a folding table, sitting an a clear plastic sheeting- that's because some one in the past history of this 50's fixer used asbestos tile, then put down carpet. i sew, so i made a skirt for the table and Velcro'd it to the table underside. 3 boxes 2 cats. and a smaller one in the crate with the eating disorder cat. my vet recommend a box for each cat plus 1 spare.

Get a roll of precut vinyl flooring at Home Depot or Lowe's . Cut to fit your area and put on top of the carpet. It's thicker than plastic sheeting. To protect and keep the edges down, you can put the thick rubber out door entry mats on the edges. Add other litter box mats or rugs to stop the tracking. My cats sometimes pee out the entrance to the storage container boxes, so need the protection there too.

  • Barb Barb on Jul 04, 2017

If you have left over piece of carpeting left over cut to the size of the area you need it for and have the edges bound at any carpet store for around $15 this way it blends in. Or here are some other picture ideas. I hope I was helpful to you. HAPPY 4TH OF JULY

I use a washing machine drain pan. Fits both litter boxes for my 2 cats.

Do you want something water proof? If that doesn't make a difference use something you already have lying around the house. A rubber dish washing mat, even an old bath towel, a silicone mat the type used to keep items in place.

Surprised no one else mentioned this....I use the bed pads made for folks with incontinence issues. It protects the floor just as it would protect the mattress. Stray litter is easily shaken back into the box, and to top it off they are washable, so can be used for years.

  • Dee Dee on Sep 04, 2023

Costco sells mats made of recycled water bottles and are washable.

I really like LibraryKAT's idea of using a large storage bin. Very creative and problem solved.

  • Mogie Mogie on Sep 05, 2023

Do you use a low tracking litter?

Pellet based litter won't track since the pine pellets are too large to get caught under the cats nails.

Low dust clumping litter has larger pieces so also harder to get under cat nails.

Fragrance free litter is coated to make it dust-free which helps reduce tracking.
