DIY Card Catalog Ikea Hack

In an effort to add some much needed storage space to my daughter's room, I decided to replace her nightstands. I found the perfect size piece at Ikea. I picked up two of these Ivar 3-drawers chests to use as nightstands in the room.
Clearly, they were too plain as is so I gave them a little makeover. I had some leftover wood we had used to install a shiplap wall in our kitchen. It is called luan, and it's a very thin wood which is perfect for this project.
I cut up my leftover wood into squares. I used 3 squares per drawer front. To attach them I added wood glue on the back of each square and held it in place with wood clamps until the glue was fully set. I did this in sections, two at a time. Once the pieces were all in place, I painted the entire chest with white chalk paint. To seal it, I used a furniture wax.
Here you can see how thin the wood veneer is on the drawer fronts.
I found the most adorable bin pulls that look like they belong on a library cabinet. They were the perfect size for my little squares. I also added casters to the bottom of the chest to give it some height and make it easy to move around. These little chests offer a ton of storage space in a small area!
