Do you have experience re-doing a Washroom floor?

There is no floors that will adhere to a painted floor. An option to consider is to cover it with Laminate flooring.

Yep, the paint will have to be removed for any flooring to stick.

Peel and stick vinyl squares will stick, but prep is a key. In your situation with the painted floor, they wouldn't stick properly. Sheet flooring would work, but you would just have to lay it down without gluing it. Let gravity hold it in place. Then use vinyl base board along the perimeter glued to the wall.

Thanks Janet and William. The grinder/buffer comes in this weekend. Let the fun begin. My projects always seem to domino into a major undertaking but well worth it in the end. This room is where the furnace. water softener, water heater, and well pump for the entire house is located not to mention the washer and dryer. I am so looking forward to a cleaner and brighter "dungeon"

In my tiny bathroom, we removed the wood baseboard and installed a subfloor over the old bathroom linoleum and glued down sheet vinyl flooring. Afterwards, replacing the wood baseboard. It's great!

I considered this Joan but with this being a basement floor I really didn't want to create a pocket for moisture between the luan and concrete. Thanks for the suggestion.

why don't you mark the squares off with tape and paint w/black & white paint in a checkered board pattern?

Have given it many considerations but since this is not a new concrete it looks like I will be covering it with a sheet vinyl I did consider doing the faux marble which is a gorgeous project on Homtalk but just not feasible. So far in the project the paint has been grinded off the floor and dust is throughout my house but looking forward to finishing my project and a dust free home!

Thanks Crystal for the input. I am going to go with a black and white big square sheet vinyl. I just got done grinding paint OFF that floor so needless to say no mater how hard I tried to control the mess it is spring cleaning in this corner of NW Ohio due to all the dust through out my house! I am going to be way ahead of the game and be able to be outside when all others are just getting started cleaning. At least that is what I keep telling myself,

Luxury vinyl tile/plank (LVT/LVP) clicks together and floats on a floor, so no worries about sticking. It is also waterproof except at the edges of the room of course. Buy the thickest mil you can afford - check the warranty, that will let you know the durability.

I absolutely can not recommend "peal & stick"; it is very persnickety. Laminate also floats. You don't have to but I do recommend putting the paper liner (especially on concrete), better to not need it than wish the heck you had. The flooring has a wicked sticky overlap (like a ship-lap). I recommend a textured surface; a smooth surface always shows water marks. Personally, for my home, I would go with a bamboo or my absolute favorite cork laminate. It is always warm to the bare feet. It has a soft feel, is quiet when dropped on & general room-noise absorbing, nearly indestructible, lasts hundreds of years with little or no maintenance, and looks more like real wood than real wood, doesn't give off toxic fumes, & is a renewable product so is great for the environment.

Thanks for the advice! I have chosen a black and a bright white vinyl with a bit of a texture. It is to be installed Wednesday, The cabinet that is above the washer and dryer is painted and I waiting for the help to rehang the doors. Paper for the two walls and the pantry are under the stairway is on order. This has been quite the project. Just hopes it meets all my expectations when it all comes together. After all this will come the bead board, trim and its installation which will be the the final step.
