need some info please- I'm assuming an exterior door is opening and closing? if this door is in a hall way , shorten the hall by putting a tall curtain on a tension mounted rod. remember that cold air sinks so puddle the curtain a bit on the floor. this will help. does the exterior door have a storm door? if the screen part of the the storm door hasn't been covered by the slide up window, and you can slide the window into position.. get it done. if you can't get the glass part to slide up..cover the screen part, tape on the plastic. window film, clear trash bag, roll of near clear plastic drop cloth... anything air won't move thru.

next...how well does your door fit the opening? my 50's fixer has some generous gaps at the bottom of the door. for under 2 bucks (in my area at least) you can purchase a plastic door sweep. i have mine held in place with painters tape. in order for it to work, it needs to touch the floor and runs the width of the door.

then there are the gaps on the sides and top of door. foam tape is available in different thickness and widths.

as far as opening and shutting the door for entry and exit....yeah.... it's cold. close the door when some one enters the house. don't hold it open when waiting on someone.

It has to do with the density of the air. Cold=dense. Warm=less dense. When you open the door the air tries to equalize. The cod air goes into the less dense air forcing the warmer air out.

I just saw this on another site: Try either a pool noodle or a foam pipe insulator. If it's a pool noodle, you'll have to run a knife down one side to cut a split in it. Put it on the underside of your door and it will make a really nice insulating sweep and will open and close with your door. (You may have to cut it down to size if the length of the foam is longer than your door is wide.)
