You could use chalkboard paint on top of the painting and turn it into an ever changing message board.

It would be helpful if I knew the dimensions of your frame. It is beautiful - what a find! I would remove the glass and either paint over the existing painting. I have a neighbor who is an artist. Her work is very abstract and IMHO anyone who can hold a paintbrush could slap on colors of their choosing and create "art". If the frame is very large it would be perfect to insert a mirror to hang on the wall or have wood cut to size and use a marbelizing kit from your local craft store and use as a table.
  • This looks like it would make a great mirror for an entry way! You could easily replace the picture and glass with mirrored glass.

@The Residences At The Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain That is exactly what I was thinking!

I agree that it would be great with a mirror. You could also do a collage of your personal photos, make a message board, or find some nice abstract fabric to put in the frame.

Frame is beautiful, I like the idea of putting a mirror in. Good luck.

Pput a thin piece of sheet metal behind the frame and use it as a magnetic board.
  • Grace Grace on Dec 23, 2013
I would paint it and distress a little, then get some Burlap and cut to fit the frame. Hot glue it and get Chicken wire cut to fit the frame and staple it on the back! Get little clothe pins for note, or use to hang earrings!

I buy these all the time! If it's gold paint it and sand it so the gold shows through! Take out the glass and paint the picture with chalk board paint! I give these to everyone, I make little ones to hang at the front door so people can leave messages, or big ones to put up messages and schedules. For my father so he knows when to take his medication. I used other ones for Christmas painted little ones and hung a Christmas bulb in the middle. They are fun!

You could screen it for a message board or Creative Inspiration board! It might even hang vertical! Smiles, Cyndi

I took one like this and made it into a large chalkboard. Another I left open and placed items inside it on the wall ...you ca kind of see them on the right and left of my tree here...

@Maria DiTondo I had found a small wire frame that fit inside mine but many people use chicken wire along the back of the frame to hang on....love to see when done!

If you dont wish to put a mirror in it, you can always turn it into a shadow box or use it on the wall to frame in several smaller pictures you have.

@BassLake MobilePark Ca Yes, I think i'm going with putting smaller things inside, its a great idea, thanks

i would paint over the picture and letter on a phrase like..."always kiss me goodnight"....and hang it over my bed.
  • Clean and spray with silver. Then run silver wire from side to side 5 or 6 times. Decorate corners with big floppy silk flowers. This is then hung on the wall. ideal for hanging jewelery from for display. The more 'gory' the better. Gypsy shabby chic.

@Helen Weaver great idea, but no room on bedroom walls, and I converted a spice cabinet to hang jewelry already, but would do it if I had the room, thanks

If you drink wine, cut corks in half lengthwise and glue them in to make a cork board for notes and photos.

A friend bought a large, decal monogram of their last name, put it on the wall in the DR and hung a gorgeous vintage frame over it. Looks just great and is simply elegant!

Congrats on finding such a treasure! Depending on your style, you could make a chalk board with paint, pin up board ( cover foam board with material), the possibilities are endless. Even displaying it on a mantle without anything added.... Live with it a while and it will come to you. Wish I would have found it, I do like it. Best wishes.

I like the idea of the mirror, mounted either vertically or horizontally depending on your wall.
  • Here at Tizer Botanic Gardens & Arboretum in Montana we have several window frames, with & without glass hanging in various garden settings. It looks great & invites interesting conversations.1 result is available, use up and down arrow keys to navigate.

@Tizer Botanic Gardens & Arboretum I love that idea, unfortunately I live in apt and it would probably disappear from my yard LOL but its gorgeous
  • We got this window at a garage sale. It is very unique.
  • This is the entrance to our "Secret Garden". We tell people to make sure the screen door closes so the bugs don't go in, or out. LOL. Something different & people love it.

I have two huge frames that I attached to the walls, and then filled the space with antique photos, some of family, some of strangers off the internet, all with black frames of different styles.

I happen to have a beautiful throw that is a pretty picture, just stretch it and staple it onto the back of the frame. It will look almost like a tapestry.
  • Maria Rivera Maria Rivera on Dec 28, 2013
WOW I had this same exact picture ehemteen years ago. Hated it but my daughter loved it. It had a light behind it and looked like moving water. I painted the frame a gold color and after the pic "broke" I put a collage of family photos in it. Don't know what ever happened to it. Anyway, good luck. Love the frame and I'm sure you'll find good use for it.

There are a number of things you can do with the frame if you don't like the Picture/painting. You can put another picture in it, make a blackboard with the paint and use it for a message board, make a collage, or make it so you can grow herbs or succulents.

We like to put a pic or pics inside the empty frame. They look great on the walls.

I've done 2 different things-I let my little ones 'stamp' with various shapes/paint colors, with stamps or sponges, onto white fabric/canvas, and have also found a fabric- even a sheet or pillowcase with a pattern that matches the room, and stretch it across the back, 'framing' the fabric. Show us what you end up doing!
  • Linda Linda on Jan 02, 2014
replace the picture you don't like with one you do like, or with a mirror.

Use the frame to frame a collection of keepsakes, or family photo's in smaller frames, or to make a decorative door or wall area..by mounting the empty frame on the door or wall then painting all one color .

    Turn it into a table.

Oh that would make a beautiful fairy door to a secret fairy garden. Paint the pic antique white, or better yet paint the whole thing in different shades of green, place it sideways, attach a knob or handle and door knocker and place in your garden somewhere that it would look like an entrance into the fairy realm. How fun!

Another idea is to make a headboard out of it. Take a piece of 1/2" plywood and cut it just a bit smaller that the frame.Cut a piece of 2" foam to fit inside the frame. Adhere it to the plywood, cover it with batting and a fabric of your choice. Place the frame around it and nail it to the plywood. Put hangers on the back and hang it on the wall behind the bed.

Paint the inside with chalkboard paint
  • Louie Louie on Jan 06, 2014
Hi Maria, yeah, instead of using with a picture. I would also use it more to try and make a table of some kind. Maybe like Dena said coffee or something decorative, it doea not have to be a table or frame for a picture, but more a creative piece of art. just take like 10 mintues and you'll think of something. louie

It would be beautiful framing (grandma's) antique lace tablecloth, or a sentimental piece of yours. Change the color of the frame to accent the piece inside......perfect!
