The cabinets can be painted or stained. What is the floor made out of?What is the backsplash made out of?

Well, not sure about that plastic backsplash, but if you can tile over it, I sure would; if you can pull it off, even better. If you're not into tiling (my DH and I tiled our kitchen backsplash and it's gorgeous and SO easy!), you can do wainscotting like this: http://farmhouse5540.blogspot.ca/2015/01/hand-made-christmas-presents.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed:+Farmhouse5540+(FARMHOUSE+5540)

You can send the cabinet doors out to be professionally painted and keep the light oak trim, which looks very nice, chang out some of the doors to inset glass ...as to the floor, what is it made from?

Elizabeth has great ideas for the colour of the cabinets. The floor is not bad colour and with grey accents it would look great. There are many new grey colours out there and the grey with alittle green in it is popular. we replaced our counter with ahigh end laminate which looks great and does not take extra grade like granite. We also did new tiles and it was surprisingly cost effective. You can get wall ready and look and wait for a goid sale when they change patterns. Buy extra and store.

When all else fails for back splash add contact paper.

    • Laura Laura on Feb 10, 2017

Would contact paper stick to ceramic tiles....long term....in a kitchen ?

  • JoEllen JoEllen on Feb 10, 2017

You clean them to make sure no oil is on them and it will stick. I know people who have even covered the cabinet tops with contact.

I have put wall paper that you can paint it comes in white and there are many different patterns you can choose from. I did my kitchen cabanets then did a light varnish with a rag so just like a wash over the pattern and it looked like tuscany was beautiful. could also do it on backsplash. I had a friend that did ceiling and it looked like old tin tiles beautiful...

I am so sorry I did this in a townhome that I sold a few years back but the new owners loved what I did I don't have any pictures

If you are willing to paint the cabinet. I would use a Chalk Paint in an off white. That my downplay the color of the tile backsplash and floor.

Change the counter bad paint the cabinets you might find the backsplash will look totally different

Changing the counter top to coordinate with the tile backsplash would change the color of the backsplash. Look into Granite Transformations, They cover the existing cabinet tops with a granite veneer rather than a solid granite top which requires a lot of destruction and rebuild.

Painting the cabinets a light gray would compliment the new appliances.

The drawers with the bins are intended to have beans & seeds or other dried products in them. It would be similar to a cabinet that would have been in an old country store that sold thinks in bulk lots rather than bags and boxes like we have now.

Hey had an idea. If you paint the wall tiles one colour and the grout a coordining colour and the cupboards your might not hVe to change the counter. Also you could put a large piece of art on the wall to draw your eye instead of the tiles.

I am wondering if there are any floor products which can be installed over the current floor...I would have a talk with some people from the home improvement stores to find out...and what it would cost...Some of those stores also have classes...so just cover that base...There are instructions online about how to paint cabinets...Get some info on "refacing" the cabinets...Obviously, the issue is that the colors here clash with each other. If you're on a budget, consider new laminate countertops...they come in granite looks, etc...They are better than in the past. You can also change hardware on cabinets. What I would do is paint the cabinets white or a cream color, get counters the same color, and take off the tiles on the backsplash and use paint made for kitchens to add color and washability. Then you would not have to change the floor. All of that is cost effective, and you'd just need a little help or advice about how to prep the backsplash area for the paint.

pull the cabinets doors off and take off all hardware. wash well to get off any oils, grease, grime, and then paint the color of your choice. you may have to sand them some to get the paint to stick depending on the kind of surface you have.

I would paint the trim on them a different color than the rest of the doors. gives them a two tone color. pick one of the colors for the drawers and do the same. add new hardware for an updated look.

for the glass inserts you could add different kinds of beans like this

or if you can find stained glass to replace the size that is already there.

use them like picture frames to display photos or old family recipes.

put pretty linens or dish towel in there.

Don't paint the cabinets!!!! Stain them darker...REALLY a LOT easier than painting them otherwise. TOTALLY get rid of that backsplash. Take a crowbar and take them off!!!! They do nothing for the kitchen. Just be careful not to put holes in the wall. Replace with smaller tiles....you can really do it yourself. It's not hard with mastique glue, then grout it. With premade grout these days it can't be much easier. Just make sure the tiles are even before you let them dry. The floor should be OK with darker cabinets.

I have already shared some thoughts, but here is a little more. I suggested painting the cabinets white or cream. One reason for this is to lighten up the whole look of the room. It will look brighter in there. IF you do not want to tackle removing the wall tiles, you could always find a nice picture to put up...perhaps framed with a wide white border...or put up something of choice that would be white or cream, at least in part, to break up the dark visual effect of those tiles. From your photo, it APPEARS that the color of both those tiles and the floor are similar. So my plan might be worth a try, avoiding some of that heavy duty work.

You could use wall hooks that you press on...ask your hardware or home improvement store for guidance on that. Personally, I would not paint the cabinets gray, because even if it is a light gray, it is adding more darkness. Gray would be fine if you were to change the wall and floor materials. There are many options for things to hang on the wall...that will be interesting to the eye...They can be quite inexpensive. You can frame pretty greeting card images, or pictures from calendars...or from magazines...Flea markets or thrift stores are good sources for ideas. Contact paper...well, just remember that it is so hard to remove, if you want to, that you are stuck with it for good...pardon the pun.

(And you will not be able to put hot items onto it). If you're renting, you have to clear anything you do with the landlord.

I strongly suggest you get yourself a good sized cutting board for your counter, unless you have a countertop that is very strong, like granite, quartz, or the like. We use ours every day, and we wash it at the end of the day. No big deal. This is nice for people with laminate countertops. One last comment: If your floor is a very light color, it will show all the dirt. But that is personal preference.

paint the cabinets the lightest shade of the color in the tiles. Change the hardware to a more contemporary one.
