You can purchase small but strong magnets in packages at a craft store and glue a decorative button, fun bottle cap, tiny foreign coin, puzzle piece, beads etc on to make your magnet unique. You can also reuse the flat advertising magnet from the local pizza shop or realtor or insurance agent. Simply cut the magnet and adhere it to a snapshot, cartoon, etc to create a larger magnet.

I believe in super magnets... those flat magnets aren't what they used to be - lol one of my favorite ways to make them is to get a clear, plastic cabuchon - they are rounded and magnify... superglue a picture between the magnet and the plastic. fun way to use head shots from photos that normally would be too small to really enjoy - obviously culling from 'old-school' prints. but the photo can be any subject. superglue is great, dries clear, doesn't yellow, and works well with the stronger magnets.

Go to your local craft store and find the tiny clothespins. This gives you not only the magnet, but now you have a clip to hang a work of art (aka: Kids artwork), pictures, menus, grocery lists, etc.

clip a favorite picture from anything...cut mat board to fit, use peel and stick magnetic tape, and you're done! You can also spray it with clear acrylic to keep it clean and shiny.

In addition to the suggestions above, I save all broken jewelry, especially pieces that I love of course. These can be glued to magnets and still enjoyed. Pins or brooches with the back broken off are the easiest, but button earrings would work too, as well as larger sized pendants.

Buy tiny little straw hats at dollar store. Glue magnetic strip to back and then decorate with tiny flowers, leaves or even small gem pieces. I even glued on a bit of fake hair. My Women's institute did these over 15 years ago and I still have mine on the frig.

I purchased children's alphabet magnets from the dollar store. Then I spray painted them red on both sides and they look great in my kitchen and on my refrigerator. I have also done this in gold, which makes a fantastic gift. But you'll need two sets. Can't really write too many words without needing to repeat a letter!
