Sewer gas with low temps

When the temp dips below zero I get the smell of sewer gas coming from the drain in my laundry room. Not a problem during warm weather. I've tried enzyme cleaner, hot water, etc.

Is there a trap as part of this drain? Is there water in the trap? If you don't have a trap, installing one will eliminate the problem.

Hi Jan, it's pretty common for traps in drains that are seldom used to dry up in the winter due to dry conditions. The most common I've seen is in floor drains, and the remedy is to just add water. However, I'm not sure this is the issue you're facing, and it sounds like you are adding water. In that case, it may be an issue of any of the following:

Improper venting could siphon the water from the traps when you use other fixtures, you could have a blocked vent line at the roof (ice or snow can block), or even a frozen vent line. All of these problems might be related. I would definitely suggest adding water in every drain in the laundry first, though. Even in the floor drain or safety pan drain.

@Hamtil Construction LLC Thanks for the tips. I'll try more water in the drains. We have had lots of subzero weather (Minnesota) lately so there could be something frozen down the line. Again thanks.

and with the freezing temps, get a bottle of windshield washer fluid for 30 below and add it to those drains to fill the traps. then you don't need to b worried if they freeze as they wont. good luck
