We had a wood stove that started doing that.We finally figured out it had a broken weld some where. The heating and cooling of the metal caused it to tick and ping with the contracting and expanding. We lived with it until we got a new stove.

@Dawn Thanks Dawn. Much appreciate the note. That is probably what it is then! (and we only use it sporadically between Dec and March, but it is annoying!
  • Best advice - get rid of it & if you need a gas fireplace go with one that vents outside. A ventless ones main byproduct is moisture which can lead to all sorts of issues in the house with water condensation on the windows, etc... Another byproduct is carbon dioxide & one main reason the manufacturers state a window should be cracked open when operating - well that & to prevent the next issue... Now that is assuming it is working flawlessly, if it isn't & the burn becomes incomplete then another byproduct of combustion comes into play which is carbon monoxide.

@SLS Construction & Building Solutions thanks. had to switch from a vented to a ventless when I replaced the deck with a sunroom. hasn't done this in the 1st 4 years, so I agree.... an inspection is necessary just for having a gas fireplace(s). *** I DID turn the gas to it;s highest level for more heat this year, where we always kept it near 80%, and a few days ago, I lowered it some and SO FAR... no noise (buckling).... so living on HOPE!

My advice is to have it inspected by a professional.

@Jim G Not all but many contractors work project to project. Rather than focusing on their clients. Doing the best they can for each of their clients so that their clients call them back for future work and refer them to new clients. These client-focused contractors are out there, but you have to search for them.

Jim, if the contractor won't do it, you might check with your gas supplier. We have 2 vented gas heaters and our gas company does an annual inspection, free.

@Jim G Please do that, Just tell them about your "noise" problem and tell them you're concerned about a potential gas leak. Sounds like a weld has popped, but better to have a pro take a look. They can also come up with a solution to fix it as well, I would think.
