What's your opinion on the best brands of kitchen cabinets? I'm redoing our kitchen and don't know where to begin looking. We have a mid range budget. Thanks!

Try Lowe's or Home Depot or Menards. I'm assuming you are doing the work yourself. Their cabinets are of a good quality and I have purchased several from Lowes and Home Depot. I don't use their contractors. We do it ourselves.

Are you doing the reno or having someone do it? Do you want pre-fab cabinets or custom?

Go to Home Depot and sit down with their kitchen designers - take your measures and budget with you - they will put it in the computer and design a kitchen just for you! We did this twice - for two different houses. This time we ordered the cabinets already built and installed them ourselves. Last time we had them install them. You can change things according to you budget and best part - there is no obligation to use them!

Home depot will take the time to make sure that your budget and space needs are accounted for. Good luck!!!

Check out a local cabinet maker. Where I live, (Virginia) there are several with prices comparable to Lowe's or Home Depot. The quality is considerably better and as small business owners they really care about customer service. I would check all options.

I would not advise Home Depot or Lowes. Having past issues with both stores I will tell you they hire outside installers that are terrible. Do yourself a favor and research your local tradesmen.

Stay away from Lowes. They did a kitchen and bathroom for us. The contractor now Cale and dined us to death, plus spent 3 months on the project....never again. Home Depot have had terrible problems with them, too. Use a private contractor.. I will for any future projects.

Wow! So sorry to hear about that. You'd think that they'd be more accountable since they're backed by Lowes. Thanks

There are a ton of different brands of cabinetry out there and trying to decide on one can be very overwhelming. I would suggest instead to start visiting local showrooms in your area and see what services they offer and how the handle kitchen projects. Is the person who designs the layout the same person who comes out and who is the same person that places the order to the cabinet factory? Do they do full projects or offer installation of the cabinetry in a prepared space. Will they meet and work with the outside cabinet installer/contractor so that everyone is on the same page with the design details.Do they listen and HEAR what you are saying. Do they ask questions of how you use your kitchen or how you want it to look. Do they educate you on their products? Do they talk to you about your budget and expectations? Do you feel comfortable with them?

Most showrooms carry cabinetry lines in different price points. Look for wood dovetail drawer boxes w/ full extension undermount glides, good quality hinges, matching finished veneer ends. Cabinet box construction should be either a high quality furniture grade engineered particle board or 1/2"- 3/4" plywood. White finishes should be an opaque stain not paint and still have a catalysed conversion varnish over it.

Last but not least, look for contractors who have a lot of experience in doing kitchens and like your kitchen person, who listens and HEARS what you are saying. Do your due diligence in checking them out. No project goes perfectly smoothly as there is always a couple of hiccups. How they and you address them should be discussed prior to signing on the dotted line.

I wish you the best with your kitchen project!

PS..short answer to your question, I like the Brookhaven cabinetry by Woodmode. I have it in my own kitchen.

This is our kitchen from IKEA. My husband and I built and installed all the cabinets in 2008, and they look as good as the day they were finished. As you can see, ours are what I call "screaming white", since I wanted a light kitchen. With the bamboo floors, I didn't want wood. Tthe bottom shelf of the cabinets is a lighted shelf. So with a flick of a switch I have cozy under cabinet lighting.

Looked at the big box stores, even went to furniture makers who specialized in kitchens. The boxes for their cabinets were pressboard! When I mentioned that his billboard said their cabinets were all wood, his reply was, "well, the pressboard is from wood." So.... we visited IKEA. They have every kind of finish you can imagine. Traditional, rustic, modern, retro. You name it. And the installation is the easiest you will find in any kitchen system. Ever. It's worth a look. Good luck with your remodel!

Wow! I love the way the "screaming white" looks with your floors! I would have never thought to look at Ikea for the cabinets, but that's a great Idea. Thanks!!
