What can I do with this bathroom vanity?

Okay guys, I am remodeling my master bath, I have this beautiful dresser that I want to convert to the vanity but it is only 29 inches tall and I want it at least 32. Would appreciate ideas on how to increase the height without losing the aesthetics of the piece. Thank you.icon

Perhaps you can add 3" round wooden ball feet to the legs of the piece, and paint to match? That would give you the additional 3" of height you need.

Found these for an example: https://www.amazon.com/Tall-Wooden-Furniture-Bun-Feet/dp/B00CIIJPRG

If you don't mind a little extra height, these are available right now!

Add a vessel sink on the top - we did in one of former houses and it was beautiful and gave us the exact height we needed. Here is an example of what I am referring to:

Thanks. I'm thinking I like the idea of a vessel sink.

Will you be adding stone or tile to the top? If so, you can add the extra height under the counter top - a sturdy framed box. With a bit of an overhang, and painted to match, it wouldn't show and would allow more storage room under the sink.

We're currently redoing our bathroom, too. And while the vessel sinks look lovely, it's much harder to clean the counter around them - no swiping the water over the edge of the counter and into the sink.

Beat me to it. JMO but I think this is the best solution. The framed box will better distribute the weight of the stone. And the extra height will accommodate the sink so that you don't lose so much of the top drawers.

Also if you add to the feet it will look off..

Ditto on the vessel sink. They may look good but they don't function well and they are a PITA to clean.

I've done this myself to wood pieces that weren't quite the right height. The ones on ebay might blend into the style of your dresser beautifully while adding height.

Here's my dresser-turned-vanity with a vessel sink. (The tile is not installed, just standing there for me to decide if I like it.) I put about 20 coats of poly - hand rubbed - on the wood and it works fine. (The picture looks shinier than it is.) And I didn't have to pay for expensive granite. I disagree on the comments about the vessel sink. It's super easy to clean and with the right faucet and push drain, there's no splash out. The height of the dresser did not matter once I had the sink on. This dresser has leveling feet, so If yours does not, you could add them for a little bit of height. I removed 2 of the 3 drawers from behind the door section and constructed a shelf for cleaning supplies above the bottom drawer. For yours, I would make a cutout in the top 2 drawers for the drain pipe and construct a half drawer section on each side. Not sure how fun that would be to do without the right woodworking tools! I specifically searched for a center doored dresser on craigslist when I planned mine. This was not a difficult project and I'm very pleased with the result.

Maria, I actually have a dresser identical to the one you re-purposed; maybe I should use it instead since yours is so beautiful . The sink you are using is also similar to the one I have picked out. And I'm with you on the poly; I've decided to not add another top as I want to keep the original "look" of the piece. Hubby says he is going to modify the drawers so we won't lose them so I guess you and I are on the same page. Thanks so much for your post.

Can you attach the dresser to the wall with brackets at the higher height you are looking for? It would be no different than hanging a cabinet on the wall.

I recently replaced my vanity in my bathroom with the newer higher heighted vanity and I just love it! No more bending over. How did I ever live so long with the old one?? LOL

    • Donna Donna on Feb 27, 2017

I do like the higher vanity but I can't add too much height as my husband is in a wheel chair and we use the same vanity.

Most people probably won't like this but if it were mine, I would seriously consider removing the frill and legs on the bottom and then build a box for it to set on. Since I love hiding spots...that box would have a front that came off or lifted up for more storage.

Thanks for the idea. Definitely something to think about.

I see what you mean. Home Depot may have the curved ones too. But they may not be the same exact curve. Or when you remove the ones on there, there may be a chance that to exchange for straight ones and extend for the curved.

Here's a suggestion: remove the top, add the desired height with a 1x3 frame, replace the top, paint. Make sure your cabinet is secured to studs in the wall. You have a beautiful vanity and a great opportunity to get creative. Enjoy your project. Best of luck.

I like the idea of having space underneath for easy cleaning. Soooooo many options!

Maybe build a small platform to raise the dresser turned bathroom vanity to your desired height. You can always add some interesting detail to the platform by adding decorative moulding to 'disguise, it.

  • Diane Diane on Feb 26, 2017

I haven't read all the comments, but i love your dresser and i would have a hard time cutting anything off. So i think if it were mine I'd build it 'up' not down. It's only 3 in, you could build that up with marble, granite..etc.

Best of luck. Hope to see it when you decide.

If you want to raise it to bring the height of the sink up, you may want to consider using a vessel sink. You wouldn't have to raise the height of the counter to have the sink at a more usable level.
