Kitchen cabinet renovation

My husband and I want to redo our flat front 60's style kitchen cabinets. I painted them white a couple of years ago and I'm really tired of it! I want to add some kind of detail or molding to the cabinet doors before repainting them with a rustoleum product that I found. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions for adding molding or details to the front of cabinet doors?

  • We redone our cabinet doors, we put dental molding about 21/2 from the edges all the way around and repainted them white, but you can paint them any color you like and I love them, it completely changed the look of the cabinets.

stencils are a cheaper way to go...little cheap flat el brackets look great and are very cheap!put in corners as accents etc.find your budget and your style.. then you will know just what to do...

What I have done in the past is to change the hardware that makes a big difference too.
  • Small trim that could be mitered/cut as framing on doors could cost you about $5 a door. Trim at Lowe's can be found for as little as $4 for a simple quarter round. Adding or even spray painting your hardware could change the look easily and inexpensively. Rustoleum hammered spray paint is marvelous at changing the look of hinges and knobs.

Currogated metal, wire inserts, lattice, using a mitre saw to add an edge, decoupoge, laying a material (such as lace) over and spray painting thru, stencils, two tone paint, adding half round geometric designs, there are so many ways to update and personalize flat front cabinets. Assuming they are wood and not laminate, you can do just about anything you want.Laminate can be updated but would be a little harder to attach trim to them or make paint hold well. Google embellishing cabinets or adding trim to cabinets and you can find hundreds of ideas. You can order all kinds of wood turnings and medallions from any woodworkers catalog and often at places like Hobby Lobby or Crafts 2000. I am getting ready to paint my cabinets and then paint the trim in gilt to add some bling. Also, while they can get pricey, crystal knobs add a lot to a boring cabinet. No point in going to the expense of doing a good paint job to just put back the same old knobs and pulls. Even less expensive builder grade brushed silver available in packs of 10 for $20 would be better than the same old thing.

My husband built me a sewing center a few ago and decorated with wood moldings, trims and appliques from Home Depot. I also like the idea of Ceiling Tiles mentioned above. And, yes, let's not forget the hardware. It can make quite an impact. Good luck.

I purchased un-finshed box store cabinets , cut off base plate added feet ,added molding to doors and drawers (whole kitchen molding was 32.00 for all cabinetry, and then painted and glazed it to go with new counter tops. but the molding was what really changed the look of cabinets into something fancier. Still need to add hardware
