Full sized Bedroom Furniture

I've admired my Aunt Betty's bedroom suite for years. It was bought in the late 40's or early 50's. She died a year ago. Her daughter has decided to give me the bedroom suite. My problem is that it has a full sized bed and most of our guests need a queen sized bed. Do you know of any way to use a full sized headboard/footboard on a queen sized box springs?

  • It will not look right. Why do your guests need a queen? I would not worry about what your guests need as much as using the furniture that you love and cherish. You could maybe/ probably extend the headboard but without a pic, I cannot give an idea.

@The Garden Frog with C Renee Some of my guests are very large and don't fit into a full size that well. I don't have the furniture yet so I can't take a pic. And I'm kind of in the same frame of mind, but I thought if there is a way, I can find it on Hometalk!

If you could provide pictures of the head and foot board that might help some our knowledgeable members be able to make suggestions. I have to agree with C Renee though. Unless they're "moving in" a couple of nights in a full sized bed, should not be an issue. LOL

  • If the bed is solid wood with larger posts, you may be able to "add" a few inches on each side with some wrought iron pieces and another post which will be for the new rails which could frame the current queen size mattress and box spring on the current metal frame. Another idea would be to look for a trundle bed to put underneath and pull out so the guests can "stay" together..

@The Garden Frog with C Renee I love the idea of the trundle bed! I'm not sure the wrought iron would work on this bed, but I'm going to try it when the time comes. It just might work!

Rocklers Hardware (I think that's what it's called) sells hardware that coverts double beds into queens. I bought a set years ago but never got around to using them but they were brackets that looked pretty simple and I don't think it would look strange.

If the headboard is flat and not curved in any way, it could be attached to the wall and used with a free standing bed frame. Then you could make simple side tables (sort of like shelves) that attach next to the headboard that would make it appear to be seamless. Not knowing the style, it is hard to see if this might work.

@Jeanette S They are those big rounded columns. I wish I had a picture. Thanks!

Hello Shirley! Welcome to Hometalk! I'm sure you will love it! I wanted to mention that there is only a 6 inch difference in the size of the mattress between full and queen...3 inches on either side. This may not be a big issue. I look forward to seeing the photos so that we can all help give you some direction!

We had a regular bed and wanted a king size. We were able to use the footboard to make the headboard wider. We cut off the ends of the footboard and attached them to the headboard. Looked and worked out great for us. We didn't need the footboard because our room was not very wide.

@Pat Thanks for your input! I think I'm going to go with the conversion kit. I so wish I had a picture to share. I don't think this would work in this case. If I'm remembering correctly, it has four large posts at each corner. I've always admired it, but really can't remember the details too much!
