That's a good question. I have the same problem and need to know what is the best way to handle this, as well.

I would try the old owl trick. It works to keep birds out of your garden. Try placing an owl statue close to or on your porch, as long as it is in plain sight of on coming birds.

We have had this problem in our barn and on our carport. We have had two owl statues in our barn. One was stationary, one on a string so it swung in the breeze. Sparrows simply swerved around them. Even tried tying white plastic grocery bags to flutter to scare them-- hasnt stopped them. Having a radio on in the barn has helped somewhat.

Try a blow up plastic owl....really work great. they swing in the air. Starlings were scared of them. Never did come back. I believe they bought them at Ace Hardware. If all fails try some annoying loud music if you can stand it. Hope you get rid of those pests. Be Safe!

I wonder if hanging old CDS/DVDS around would scare them away?? Might be worth a try!!

Thanks, I'll try that. Nothing else seems to work.

Old Cd's might work, or if you don't ave any of those, a mylar balloon cut into strips might work. There is also a shiny holograph tape you can buy.. it's called scare tape and comes on a roll like packing tape. If the area near your stairs gets good sunlight you could also try solar pest repellers. they emit a sound that is usually inaudible to humans but will keep mice, birds and other small critters out of the area.

Hang several wind chimes... preferably something shiny, the reflective objects and sound will scare them away!
