I have a very similiar dilemna in my bedroom - black lacquer dresser and armoire came with the husband and it matches nothing else in our bedroom and isn't to my taste. My hubbys a pro. painter and he said can't be done but I think it's just because he'd rather buy new - I'm more frugal. I'm going to take it on myself when he's not looking and I bet I can make it better!!!

I recently redid my bedroom set that was beige lacquer. I first painted in with a chalk paint which worked as a primer. I went to Home Depot and they suggested I use an enamel paint as the top layer. I used a good roller to roll it on. It took several days to completely dry but it is durable and I'm loving the new look. Did not need to use a sealer on it.

I saw a post here on Hometalk where Looking Glass spray paint was used over a black primer...looked awesome! I am planning on trying this on some super cheap black end tables once the weather warms up.
