Question about covering a damaged veneer top on a night table...

I have an older bedroom suit (inherited). One of the night tables is damaged. It's obviously veneer. How could I repair this and then match the other table top to it? I've considered wood filler then paint but looking for other options.

The only thing I know of to do is wood filler or bondo, sand then paint.

You can also sand it down first and then paint it

Like the other person suggested. Bondo actually is a great filler and there are many wood filler products out there that sand nicely. Add a coat of paint, and you will have a lovely restored piece!

Wood veneer is expensive but it can be put over what you have if that's the look you are going for. Or check out a Formica. A marble-look would be nice. It would be cheaper and easier than real wood veneer. Cheapest and easiest: Contact paper.

use pallet wood on top and then stain

Since there is a rim around the top, I would opt for gluing a piece of matching formica on the top. There are many beautiful woodgrain patterns out there now. I'm sure you could find a similar one to match. Then you would never have to worry about setting a glass on the top again.

Another option, if you are in to modern decor, would be to put a piece of mirror into the depression. Or if you like Shabby Chic, try decoupaging and antique map or picture onto the top.

I just completely covered a desk with peel & stick tile (wood grain) but you can find a tile you like at various stores even some big lots type stores. Get a clear silicone to adhere it to the table only after you level it out with wood filler or a replacement piece of wood.

    Good luck!

I tiled the top and painted edges of the tile!

    no problems now!
