How I Gave My Kitchen a Facelift !

When we first bought our house I immediately noticed that everything was painted antique white; the walls, the trim, and all the doors. So the first thing I did was paint my kitchen walls red; and added red stripes to the space above my cabinets. Gradually overtime the rest of the rooms were also painted. It took me a while to realize my cabinets and my wood floors in my kitchen were the same exact colors and I really didn't like it. I saw an article to redo kitchen islands so I painted my island antique white to match the trim around the windows and the doors. I also added red stripes on the ends of the island to match the walls above the cabinets. Painting the island made it stand out from the rest of the cabinets and the floor so I was happy with it. It took a couple of weeks before I realize that the cabinets really needed to be painted also. So that's where this project begins; taking on the cabinets!
Because I have so many cabinets (18) and drawers (16), I was a little overwhelmed, so I thought I would proceed in 2 stages. I started with the cabinet doors and removed all the hardware. I sanded them all down and gave them a coat of semi gloss antique white paint. I did this two more times with a total of three coats of paint. The drawers were done in the same fashion. I followed the directions on the back of the paint can and allowed enough time between coats to sand and reapply the paint.
After all the cabinets and drawers were totally dry I put the cabinet door and drawer handles back on and remounted the doors.
Instead of painting the back of the upper cabinets white I decided on red. The cabinet doors above the stove was another matter. Those were painted white, then red, and then realizing they looked better the other way, back to white!
