What are some ideas for updating tile kitchen counter tops?

I have a 1950's house with a pale pink countertop. We're broke, so we improvised...We d a red/white stainless steel-look almost diner look. We painted the pecan colored cabinets white & used nickel door handles, painted the surrounding wall red, used faux tin self-adhesive ceiling tile for our backsplash & stainless steel-looking contact paper to cover the countertop! 10 yrs later, people still ask if my countertop is stainless steel! We put Rubbermaid closet shelving on the blank white wall to store red & black pots & pans. We hang towels & some utensils from S hooks & from the shelves.

If you want to keep the tile countertop, you could paint the tile with a oil-based primer and then paint a beautiful color or design on top.
