How do you preserve fresh cut wood for DIY projects?

    If you mean trees. The wood needs to dry out slowly for a few months up to a year for thicker logs. For thicker branches/logs (3" diameter or larger) coat the cut ends with wax or primer paint to slow the drying and prevent cracking or checking.

    I was told by the Dept of Forestry that the rule of thumb is 1 year for every 12" in diameter to be considered "dry" enough to use for firewood or lumber.
