You can purchase privacy film on rolls for that instead of the work involved in painting. Check Home Depot.

I used a roll of contact paper to give my windows a frosted look and I love it! You can cut out any shape or design as well. It gives privacy, but still lets the light in. Here's my DIY: http://www.hometalk.com/diy/windows-doors/windows/diy-privacy-for-your-windows-24868152

I have an exposed basement. I spray painted "Rustoleum's Frosted Paint" on the inside of the basement windows, and it looks fantastic and only cost $15.00 for 6 large windows. And now I have complete privacy when doing the laundry and I still get good light.

I've also seen a nice treatment on old windows using vellum (scrunched up and then partially smoother out) using beaten egg white as a glue. Probably other types of paper could also be used.

You can buy Gallery Glass online or at a craft store and paint it on your windows..it comes in many colors and I believe there is a Frost paint. You can check online at Michael's or AC Moore or other craft stores. I love this product, it is used for Faux stained glass and it dries fairly quickly. I think within 24 hours and once its dried and settled, you can remove it easily.
