Ideas needed for trailer cushions

by Judy Noack
We recently purchased an older pop up trailer. There are no cushions in it for the bench seats or beds. The previous owner tossed them. We are looking for ideas on how to make them our selves. Any advice you can give on how to make them? and what materials to use? Your ideas would be greatly appreciated.

check out a thrift store, or garden area of a Home depot, or orchard supply, if you have them in your area, maybe the cushions can be used for your trailer seats.

or buy some foam from a material store, or home stores, and wrap them in material you like.

If money is at a premium, I suggest that you purchase eggshell foam (check auto parts stores, discount and home goods stores), then go to goodwill or thrift store and pick up some heavy material items that will wear good. dismantle the clothes (jeans?) then piece together into a sheet of material, cut to size and sew. If you can use smaller cushions, pick up some pillow cases at thrift store and cover foam. No sewing and can easily be removed to wash...slip the foam in and fold over!

When i redid my pop up, i used painters canvas (the stuff use by house painters.), cut and hand painted...with the wear and tear of outdoor living they hold up beautifully and the are cheap to recover...

I just saw on Hometalk the suggestion that the best source for large pieces of memory foam can be found in mattresses...I checked on line and a 4.75" thick one runs from $159 to $199. You could buy a drop cloth at the Home Depot or Lowes to use as a cover. Cut 2 pieces to size plus 1" (1/2" seam allowance) and then make a strip 5-1/4" (5-3/4"+1/2" seam allowance) and sew up a cover. Sew it up on 3 sides and around both corners of the top, leaving an opening about half the width of the foam. Fold foam and insert into cover and hand stitch to close. For camping, sew 2 stop sheets together and use them like a sleeping bag. That way, you do not have to make a bed!

Fred Meyers sell a good size piece of foam for $20.00. It would probably take 2 for a bed. Use an electric knife to cut the foam to make the cushions! I used a soft lightweight upholstery material to cover mine.

@Cathy L. Hi Cathy thanks for the idea! The price on the foam is right! Sure hope we can get that.

We, too, purchased a new/used trailer which needed new cushions. I went to the surplus store with measurements of the space and purchased 3 in foam. I then went to a lumber yard and purchased a piece of thin plywood for the back. Had my own material and did my own stapling, creating new cushions. They are not perfect, but look good to us!!!Good Luck to you.

I've sewn cushions for everything from patio furniture to window seats, and the only cost was the fabric. I wait for outdoor fabric to go on sale, the last one being four dollars a yard. I scavenge for thrift store couches and if a friend is getting rid of a couch I take the cushions. You can also keep your eye out for some at garage sales. I cut them to the size I need with an old filleting knife and cover them. You can install a zipper or use Velcro if you want them to be removeable for laundering. Hope this helps! I love my cheap cushions! Val

I made new cushions for our RV - it is a chore..but I agree with Cathy; but the foam and make covers...and learn to make your own zippers out of the roll material because you won't find zippers long enough! I basically made mine with a top, bottom and 3" sides with zippers around three sides for future washing. I had to use three cushions for the upper bed. I also used a vinyl for the bottom and upholstery fabric for the top and sides.

@Moxie I made cushion covers for our pop up camper, and ordered a roll of zippers and the zipper pulls online. Then you can just cut the zippers the length that you need, sew in place, add the zipper pull and you are finished. Very easily done.
